November Newsletters and a WSPTA survey

Hello OH PTA Members!

Linked below is the November newsletter in both English and Spanish. We hope you find it convenient to access the newsletter online in addition to that wrinkled copy from the bottom of your child’s backpack.
Also the Washington State PTA is asking PTA members to take a survey regarding how best to engage in advocacy for the 2018 legislative session. Please consider clicking the link below and adding your thoughts. The survey will ask for your region and council numbers so those are Region: 6 and Council: 15.

Washington State PTA Survey

Hi PTA Members and Supporters of Olympic Hills,

Every Fall  the WA State PTA (WSPTA) votes on the WA State PTA Legislative Short-term platform and Resolutions. This year the existing platform is expanded and there are 4 new resolutions and 7 short-term issues  up for a vote.

We need to hear from YOU, our  PTA Members on each of these issues so our delegates can represent our PTA’s voice. Here’s the links you need – but  HURRY the survey closes on MIDNIGHTMonday, 10/9.

–          Survey Link: Seattle Council Survey

–          More info on the issues and the current WA State PTA platform:

o   2017 WSPTA Legislative Assembly Voter’s Guide: WSPTA Legislative Assembly Guide

o   WSPTA Legislative Platform (including current Resolutions): Board Positions and Resolutions

The WSPTA current short-term platform includes the following issues and your voice will help decide which issues to add. These positions help us advocate at both the state and district levels. So please take the survey ASAP.

–          2016-2018 WSPTA TOP 5 SHORT-TERM ISSUES:  1. Social Emotional Learning, 2. Amply Fund Basic Education,  3. Closing the Opportunity Gap, 4. Standards for Para-Educators and 5. Breakfast After the Bell

–          Also Supported Issues (Alphabetical order): Improving Educational Outcomes for Foster Children, Engaging Families in Student Success, Post-Secondary/Higher Education Access and Affordability, Removing Barriers to Implementing ECEAP (Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program) and Restorative Justice and School Safety (school discipline )

Next year,  and all even years, a new Short-term platform will determined.  If there’s an issue important to you or our PTA, please contact WA state Region 6 Legislative Chair Heidi Bennett heidi@bennettdirect.net or Hillary Shaw, legchair@scptsa.org,  our Seattle Council PTA Legislative State chair. New platform submissions are due May 1, 2018.

Thank you for being a member of Olympic Hills PTA and for making your voice heard. Take the Seattle Council Survey ASAP before it closes on 10/9.

Sincerely,

Ann Hilman
OHE PTA President

P.S.  Seattle Council PTSA is co-sponsoring  Seattle School Board  Candidate Forum, on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7pm at the Centilia Cultural Center. With so many issues facing our schools, this is an important event to attend.

Come together for Sand Point Elementary and Charleena Lyle

Brisk clap, friends and families of Olympic Hills. It’s time to come together to support a neighbor school and larger community, and we only have 24 hours to help.

Sand Point Elementary PTA is requesting support to create small care packages for their families who are residents of Solid Ground Housing (Brettler) in Magnuson Park whose lives are deeply impacted by the killing of one of their parents, Charleena Lyle.

We hope to make 230 care packages that include:

1) Notes of support for adults and children
2) Grocery gift cards for parents in $10 denominations from Safeway
3) Bottles or packets of bubble bath for children
4) Packets of microwave popcorn
5) Bottles of bubbles or other happy non-age specific item for children. (stickers?)
6) fruit rollups/fruit snacks
7) gift bags/ribbon

Email point person Bronwen Houck (bronwen.houck@gmail.com) for drop off location. Donations are needed by Wednesday morning. You can also PayPal (info@bronwenhouckphoto.com) donations for grocery gift cards and/or supplies.
